"Features reworks from wonderful artists from around the world. Cyrus Reynolds put together an absolutely sublime version of Steve Gibbs' Patterns. Beautiful stuff!"
Stephen McCauley, BBC Radio Ulster
“Steve Gibbs is able to navigate complex emotion in the most enthralling manner. Meditative, poised, and remarkably subtle...”
UK composer Steve Gibbs follows his stunning Adrift LP (April 2017) with a beautiful set of reworks, a collection of inventive takes on tracks from the album. Three album tracks are shown in vibrant new light by Cyrus Reynolds, Ryan Davis, Fejká, Manos Milonakis and evolv over five remixes.
Established US score composer, friend and collaborator Cyrus Reynolds’ otherworldly Patterns remix features cello from Mike Kaufman and viola from Virginia Rockwell. Having reached over 1,5 million streams on Soundcloud, it finally becomes available on all digital platforms via Injazero Records. A new take on Adrift by Berlin-producer Ryan Davis (Anjunadeep, Watergate) moves from an ambient piece to a gentle club mix, whereas another Berlin producer Fejká on Christian Löffler’s Ki Records stays within the club on his pulsing new version of Patterns. Greek composer Manos Milonakis (Moderna Records) places affecting harps on his rework, while US composer evolve offers beautiful textures and soundscapes on his re-interpretation of Low Light.
Steve Gibbs ostensibly occupies a similar territory to his peers in the broad and unstructured “modern classical” world. His instrumentation - piano, strings, gentle electronics, occasional guitars - is used with a similar sense of vision as Goldmund, Ólafur Arnalds, Dustin O’Halloran, Stars of the Lid, the piano solos of Arvo Pärt. Yet Adrift retains a singularity, a distinct and forward-facing identity. Its canvas, though rich and vivid like theirs, is left purposefully spacious and open. Passages of soft microsound comparable to Alva Noto & Ryuichi Sakamoto’s duet albums or Mika Vainio merge with lusher cinemascapes akin to Clint Mansell and Max Richter. “One of the most important lessons I’ve learnt and follow as a rule is that simplicity is often much more effective,” Gibbs writes. “The space left in between the notes are almost as important as the notes themselves.”

I came across this album on the ambient show out of Australia called The Quiet Space. Like others, I was immediately struck by the cozy yet forlorn atmosphere of the entire work. I’ve listened to it dozens of times, and it never gets old for me. A quintessential late night soundtrack for intimate solitude. Michael K. Gause
